Caring for the Whole Person Training

The Caring for the Whole Person Initiative is a collaborative project organized through the California Catholic Conference and the Alliance of Catholic Health Care which seeks to ensure that parishioners and patients are accompanied, loved and supported in their serious illness and end-of-life journey. In parishes, the initiative will help parishioners understand and apply Catholic end-of-life teaching as they grapple with their own illness or that of a loved one.

The Caring for the Whole Person (CWP) training has been developed in consultation with moral theologians, ethicists, and experts within Catholic health care. The five-module training covers topics on Palliative and Hospice Care, Ethical and Religious Directives, Catholic Moral Teaching around end-of-life care, caring for parishioners and their families, communication basics for ministers/volunteers, Advance Care planning, caregiving, grief support and building a CWP Ministry at the parish level.

A Caring for the Whole Person Ministry is not meant to replace any existing ministries related to the topics mentioned above, for example an existing grief support group, but rather bring ministries that can work together and fill in the gaps needed to better serve the people in our community.

All are invited to attend this in-person training on Saturday, December 2ndfrom 8:30 am to 4:00 pm at the Christ Cathedral Cultural Center in Garden Grove. This training is being put together in collaboration with the southern dioceses of California. It is ideal that parish leaders interested in forming a Caring for the Whole Person Ministry at the parish, attend this training. Those that have taken the training in the past are welcome to attend as well and invite any new volunteers for the ministry.
